The company OHL ŽS has been working on the modernization of the 4th railway corridor in the section Sudoměřice – Votice since last June. This week, building of the second planned Mezno tunnel has started. Its construction will contribute to shortening of the travel time of trains going from the capital to the south of Bohemia. Simultaneously with the commencement of the construction, the statue of St. Barbara, the patron saint of all miners, was consecrated. She will symbolically supervise the smooth progress of construction works.
The Mezno tunnel will measure more than eight hundred meters. For its construction we use the so-called New Austrian tunneling method consisting in mechanical disintegration of the rock and its subsequent protection by the primary lining which activates the properties of the rock massif. The tunnel will be two hundred meters longer than another one under construction, the Deboreč tunnel, whose building with the same method began last December.
The modernization of the line in its entirety includes the addition of a second track in the hitherto monorail section. It will lead partly in a new route that will be two kilometers shorter than the existing line. The completion of the entire modernization is planned for 2022. The main goal is to accelerate trains to 160 kilometers per hour.
