The construction of a new wing of the South Bohemian Science Library building in České Budějovice began on Thursday 11 April. Construction works fall under the Division J – Bohemia and should be completed by autumn 2020.
Construction costs are almost 166 million CZK. The extension and technical solution was designed by Ateliér Kuba & Pilař architekti. The winning design extends the library by means of a “levitating” single-storey extension annex building that is linked to the original premises at the current entrance point. The completion of the new building and the reconstruction of the first floor of the existing building will allow the creation of a free choice area for more than 100,000 volumes of books which are now in storages.
The library has a total of 1.4 million volumes. The building will expand by almost two thousand square meters. “The main reason why the project was created was the lack of space to set up free choice of literature in the scientific section of the library. For the reader, it will be a fundamental change in respect that he will not have to choose books only in the electronic catalog, but as in other libraries he will be able to walk directly between shelves, choose a book, browse through it and decide if it is indeed the right one, or find another one on the shelf, ”said the director of the library, Ivo Kareš.
