The Olomouc railway junction is part of the 3rd Transit Railway Corridor in the section between Přerov and Česká Třebová which connects the eastern and western parts of the Czech Republic. In addition to international and domestic long distance connections, the station has a significant role in the operation of the Olomouc region.
The priority objective of the project in question is to put the railway station in construction-technical and operational condition in order to comply with the parameters of European railways for international lines and standards for modernization of selected railway network of the Czech Republic. The implementation has resulted in the increased traffic quality and safety, reaching a maximum line speed of up to 160 km per hour, improving the travel culture, reducing the negative impact of the rail transport on the population (noise control measures), increasing accessibility for people with reduced mobility and significantly improving services of passenger and freight rail transport.
The construction included the reconstruction of the railway track, the necessary reconstruction of the railway superstructure and the rehabilitation of the railway substructure, including bridges and culverts in question. New sheltered island platforms with a grade passenger access were built. Technological equipment, traction overhead lines, security and communication equipment and power equipment were also modernized.
