On Wednesday, 26 October 2011, the reconstruction of the Bezruč Park in Olomouc was ceremonially completed. It is another phase of the revitalization of parks in the territory of the city, which commenced in 2010. Upon the completion of Bezruč Park, the city obtained a completely new footbridge as well. The costs of both investment projects, the investor of which was the Olomouc municipality, amounted to CZK 35.5 million.
The reconstruction, which was under way from the beginning of March in Bezruč Park, is a part of the project titled “Renewal of Street Furniture and Road Networks in Olomouc Historical parks, the Čechov and Bezruč Parks”. “We obtained a subsidy from the Central Moravia Regional Operational Programme for the whole project amounting to CZK 34.6 million,” said the Mayor, Martin Novotný. The costs of the part that has just been completed in Bezruč Park amounted to CZK 29.8 million; the part in Čechov Park should cost about CZK 40 million and will be completed in May next year.
As a part of the reconstruction in Bezruč Park, old surfaces were removed from the roads and replaced with new ones, although, as opposed to the original plan, some roads were only repaired with respect to protection of the root system, without the construction layers having been replaced. “The reconstruction applied to about a 1.5 km long bitumen spinal road where a cycling path has already been marked, and a 700m long side path made of extracted grains,” stated the Deputy-Mayor, Martin Major.
The project also included as its part the renewal of street furniture which comprised of replacing the existing public lighting with 91 new street lamps, including a cable distribution system, and also added were 97 benches and 17 litter bins. Lockable collapsible columns have been installed on three main access roads.
Soft landscaping was also carried out during the reconstruction. New lawns were established, some trees were cut down and replaced with 18 new ones of various species and others were replanted, always in accordance with the decision of the environmental department. “The renewal of the parks in the city centre is more than a normal contract for us because Olomouc and parks belong inseparably together,” said Jaromír Pelinka, CEO of Division 3 Olomouc of the Surface Construction Branch OHL ŽS, a.s. today.
Since mid-June the ongoing reconstruction was supplemented with the construction of a new footbridge over the Mlýnský brook, connecting Bezruč Park with the botanical garden. The footbridge, the construction of which cost CZK 5.4 million, is made of formed concrete and has a shape of a slightly risen arch with the outspan of 17 meters, the width of 3.5 meters and bank piers of different heights. The new bridge enables park visitors comfortable access to the botanical garden and the public WC, which is currently located in the rosarium. 4 benches, a litter bin and a street lighting lamp were added to this area. “We will apply for a subsidy from the Central Moravia Regional Operational Programme for the ’Bezruč Park – Footbridge’ project. Its expected cost is CZK 4.5 million, which is equal to 85 % of the total eligible expenses of the project,” said the Deputy-Mayor, Ladislav Šnevajs.
Recently, the Olomouc Municipality also reconstructed Jakubský Výpad, the favourite passage from the parks located in the former city fortification area to Bezruč Park. New staircase roofing and a railing on the city fortification walls were thus constructed with the costs amounting to CZK 2.1 million. The repairs of the passage way were a part of the reconstruction of the Bailey Gardens attached to the baroque fortification walls oriented towards the Olomouc parks, which the University together with the Municipality opened to the general public last week.
In accordance with the project documents drawn up by IDOP Olomouc, a.s., a ALFAPROJEKT Olomouc, a.s., Bezruč Park was renewed by the consortium of OHL ŽS & KARVEP, the footbridge was reconstructed by Division 3 Olomouc of the Surface Construction Branch OHL ŽS, a.s. The reconstruction of the Olomouc parks will continue until May 2012 in Čechov Park.
