The first part of the project was the reconstruction of the historical building of the City Theatre which included the completion of the construction with basic facilities, rehearsal rooms and cloakrooms for actors, and the renovation of the historical facade of the building.
The second part was the new construction of the music stage of Brno City Theatre located between Lidická Avenue and Kpt. Jaroš Avenue, where it filled in the space of the former ramshackle inner block. To secure its better integration into the existing housing development and the sloping terrain, the major part of the building is embedded below the ground level – the preparation of the foundation pit alone required 15,000 m3 of soil to be excavated and removed. This is also the reason why the building is accessible from various directions and levels, instead of having only one central entrance.
The quadrant auditorium for an audience of 670 has 18 rows of seats arranged into the shape of an amphitheatre which gives theatregoers a good view of the stage and improves the acoustic qualities of the space. The stage is equipped with state-of-the-art technology, including the orchestra pit with an extendable floor and rooms used for theatre operation purposes such as changing rooms, store rooms for stage settings and sound distribution systems. The new building also provides enough space for actors and the operational staff of the theatre, costume store rooms, workshops and rehearsal rooms with quality technical equipment. The premises designed for theatregoers are situated on two different levels corresponding to the level of the entries to the theatre and the level of the auditorium elevation. A bar and its service and storage base are situated on the upper level, while ticket offices, cloakrooms, theatre shop and snack bar are situated on the lower level. The service rooms for employees are also situated there.
