Patients at Hamza Sanatorium Have a New Swimming Pool

01. 07. 2009

On 24 June 2009, construction of the swimming pool for rehabilitation and after-care in Hamza Sanatorium for Children and Adults in Luže-Košumberk was completed. The swimming pool was reconstructed by OHL ŽS, a.s., the Construction Engineering Olomouc Division according to the design drawn up by IDOP Olomouc, joint-stock company. The total costs of the reconstruction amounted to CZK 27 million.

Luže-Košumberk, 24 June 2009 – Today, construction of the swimming pool for rehabilitation and after-care in Hamza Sanatorium for Children and Adults in Luže-Košumberk was ceremonially completed. The swimming pool is located in M Pavilion and the investor – Hamza Sanatorium – obtained a grant to construct it from Norway through the Norwegian Financial Mechanism.

In the Sanatorium, M Pavilion serves as an inpatient pavilion with therapeutic treatments.  The layout of the central wing had to be completely changed so it would be possible to construct the rehabilitation pool. The swimming pool of the size of 6.3 x 14.1 meters was built on the site of the former cinema, the space of which was divided into two floors. The swimming pool base and the facilities for patients are situated on the 2ndabove ground floor. As ancillary facilities, the swimming pool has an infirmary, a barrier-free WC for men and women, two changing rooms (each equipped with 12 lockers) and separate showers.  The technical service facilities of the swimming pool (the calorifier room, air-conditioning engine room, preparation plant for swimming pool water, and the store room for chemical substances) are located on the 1stabove round floor. The useable area of both floors is 448 m2 in total.

The swimming pool is equipped with floor heating and non-slip embossed paving. The swimming pool base is rustproof, the swimming pool bottom is inclined and the depth ranges from 90 to 130 cm. The patients will have at their disposal built-in underwater stationary bikes, hydro-massaging jets, water spout, hydro-massaging benches and a counter-current.  Special grab bars and lifting attachments will facilitate patients’ movement; personnel will also be able to use a hydraulic lift to transport a patient directly from a wheel chair into the water. It is estimated that up to 132 patients will go through individual rehabilitation routines every day.

The reconstruction of M Pavilion was performed in accordance with the master plan of the sanatorium which defines it as a rehabilitation centre. The original rehabilitation swimming pool of the size of 2.8 x 6 m was suitable only for the treatment of small children accompanied by adults and it did not meet the needs of the sanatorium any longer. Alongside the interior changes of the wing,  an access ramp outside the building was demolished and arched cloisters were constructed, forming the base of the future colonnade. The roof over the swimming pool was also repaired during the reconstruction as it was in a very bad condition. Some beams were exchanged and the roof was consolidated with steel draw bars. The roof covering, interior insulation and the ceilings of the swimming pool hall are also new.

Being considerate of the needs of the patients in Hamza Sanatorium, the constructor had to implement construction works with as much respect as possible to the regime of the sanatorium, especially as regards noise and dust. Because the premises of the sanatorium are also home to a much appreciated arboretum, it was also necessary to follow the instructions issued by horticulturists and minimize the area required.

The swimming pool was reconstructed by OHL ŽS, a.s., the Construction Engineering Olomouc Division according to the design drawn up by IDOP Olomouc, joint-stock company. The reconstruction has been carried out since September last year, costing in total CZK 27 million. “Our company has a rich experience in reconstructing health care facilities. I believe that the new rehabilitation swimming pool will be appreciated not only by patients, but also by doctors and rehabilitation staff,” said Michal Štefl, Chairman of the Board of Directors and CEO of OHL ŽS, a.s., today.
