On 30thSeptember, the new catering pavilion of the Grammar School in Olomouc – Hejčín was ceremonially opened. The pavilion meets the up-to-date technological and hygienic requirements and its capacity allows up to 5,000 meals to be prepared there on a daily basis. Besides the construction of a star-shaped building, the contract also included the canteen equipment, the boiler room reconstruction, outdoor lighting, and underground services as well as landscaping works in the immediate vicinity. This was one of the largest investments in the Olomouc Region this year. The total cost of the construction amounted to CZK 114.2 million, including VAT. The building was constructed by Division 3 Olomouc of the Surface Construction Branch, OHL ŽS, a.s. according to the design drawn up by Vladimír Vychodil.
“The new pavilion has replaced the former, no longer sufficient kitchen and canteen of the Grammar School. It will serve not only students and employees of the Grammar School, but also other educational facilities,” said Martin Tesařík, President of the Region, at the ceremonial opening. “This has been one of the largest investments into the regional education system over the period of the existence of regions, “he added. The gastronomic facility has been designed to make 1,180 meals for direct consumption on the spot; an additional 820 warm meals will be produced for diners outside the school. Prospectively, other 3,000 meals are expected to be prepared by the second shift. These meals are planned for further transportation after having been shock cooled.
The building, which has a very interesting shape, was designed by Vladimír Vychodil. The ground plan of the first above-ground floor of the pavilion, which has the shape of an eight-pointed star, overlaps the ground floor, which has the shape of an irregular heptagon. It was created by completing the south-east part of the building with a fire escape. The second, more spacious floor is divided into five parts, which enables students and teachers to take their meals separately. The air-conditioning room is situated in the roof of the building, above the serving hatch. Also the centrally symmetrical roof with a dome-head, which is quite complex, is unusual. The construction is interconnected with the building of the Grammar School by means of an above-ground corridor on the first floor.
The contract also included the reconstruction of the boiler room in the premises of the Grammar School, underground services, outdoor lighting, a light liquid separator and a grease trap. The related roads and hard surfacing have also been modernized and the plantscape in the vicinity of the building has also been newly adjusted. The kitchen was equipped with the technology of suspension cookers and appliances; the serving hatch equipment is also new.
The construction was implemented under full operation of the Grammar School, which placed intensive demands especially as regards compliance with all safety regulations and instructions. The construction started in September last year and was completed in July this year. “Our workers have extensive experience in building structures for educational facilities. This catering pavilion ranks among the most interesting from the point of view of its architecture,“ said Michal Štefl, Chairman of the Board of Directors and CEO of OHL ŽS, a.s. today.
The investor of the construction was the Olomouc Region and its cost amounted to CZK 114.2 million, including VAT, out of which CZK 29 million was the price of the technological equipment of the kitchen. The pavilion was constructed by Division 3 Olomouc of the Surface Construction Branch, OHL ŽS, a.s.
