České Budějovice, 12 July 2011 – With the beginning of the school summer holidays, work on the insulation of the buildings of the Máj I and Máj II basic schools in České Budějovice got under way. The investor of this reconstruction is the chartered city of České Budějovice. The construction is financed from the EU funds through the Operational Programme ’Environment’.
The contractor took the site over as early as June, but the launch of the implementation phase was postponed until the school holidays when the schools were vacant. “The whole project is divided into two phases. Four buildings will be insulated this year and the remaining four school buildings in 2012. All eight buildings are the same – they are fourth-floor buildings with a rectangular ground plan,” said Juraj Thoma, the City Mayor. According to the statement by the Deputy Mayor, Petr Podhola, the reconstruction ranks among the most costly ever investments of the City. “The insulation and replacing of windows in the Máj I and Máj II basic schools attended by nearly 900 children will require an outlay of CZK 44.7 million,” stated the Deputy Mayor, adding that the total investment for the municipal school facilities would amount to CZK 110 million this year.
All eight buildings of the Máj I and Máj II basic schools will gradually be completely insulated. The original enclosing elements, so called Boletice panels containing asbestos, will be removed. The panels will be replaced with cellular concrete block linings. The external thermo insulation composite system will be applied to the façades, when an adhesive material, polystyrene, stiffening layer, penetration layer and external thin-coat plaster are applied to a properly treated base. All windows will be replaced with new, plastic ones, and the aluminium entrance door will also be completely new. Finally, the façades will be finished with a coloured coating.
“The school buildings date back to the end of the 1980s or, in some cases, the beginning of the 1990s, yet even these relatively new buildings require substantial reconstruction today so that their energy demands can be decreased,” said Jiří Kápl, CEO of Division 7 České Budějovice of the the Surface Construction Branch OHL ŽS, a.s. which is the contractor for the project today. The designers of the project are Petr Janů and Vítězslav Kollmann (authorized engineers of the Czech Chamber of Authorized Engineers and Technicians Active in Construction, ČKAIT). The investor is the chartered city of České Budějovice and the total cost of the reconstruction, including VAT, will amount to CZK 44.7 million. The financial means for the insulation of the schools will be provided by the European Union under the Operational Programme ’Environment’.
